Coaching Qualifications
There are 7 levels of Coach Qualification in New Zealand:
Community Coach
Grasshoppers Coach
Assistant Junior Coach
Junior Development Coach
Club Professional Coach
Competition Coach
High Performance Coach
All the Coaches in this database have passed at least one of these qualifications, or have an equivalent
Overseas
qualification, and have
significant
playing and coaching experience.
Assistant Junior Coach
An Assistant Coach is qualified to coach tennis under supervision at a club or school.
Pre-requisites for Assistant Coach
Basic tennis ability and enthusiasm for the game
Minimum age 16
First aid certificate
The Qualification Process
3 day course and assignments
Recommended 40 hours with mentor coach
Practical teaching assessment
Basic hitting/demonstration assessment on all shots
Skills & Knowledge
Teaching basic tennis strokes
Practical teaching of groups
Drills and feeding
Diagnosis and correction
Basic tactics and strategies
Lesson planning with groups
Games for groups
Plan & implement modified games
Tennis rules
Club Professional Coach
A Professional Club Coach generally works as a full time coach at a club or tennis facility.
Pre-requisites for Professional Club Coach
One year as an Assistant Coach
Must have a tutor/coach
First aid course
The Qualification Process
3 - 5 day course and assignments
Recommended 200 hour apprenticeship with Tutor Coach
Practical teaching and hitting assessment (six months later)
Theory paper (six months later)

A Competition Coach generally works as a full time professional coach including coaching of players who are training for Regional and National competitions.
Pre-requisites for Competition Coach
A Professional Club Coach qualification
At least 2 years as a Professional Club Coach

CNZ Level Two Course
4 day Competition Coach course

High Performance Coach
A High Performance Coach has completed the requirements to coach and travel with national/international high performance players.

At least 2 years as a Competition Coach
